Problem

Personal in nature, this project sought to dive into and examine the trends and behaviors I exhibited throughout a period of 6 years in my film photography career. By examining my film archive, I hoped to gain a better understanding of what aspects of film photography I prioritize and how these preferences changed over time.

Solution

When examining the stack of printed photos and negatives in my office I decided that the best way to initially organize them was by year. Doing so would allow me to apply further research filters to each roll of film that I had developed and examine various trends and how they changed over time. This proved to be very effective and also allowed me to track times in my life when photography was not a priority, and look at what events were happening that caused this shift. After looking at several characteristics in my archive I decided to implement the subcategories of quantity, color, developer, film stock, camera, format, and if the roll was shot while I was on tour. I formatted this into a grid system and conveyed each of these subsets of data on a horizontal axis while each year was on a vertical axis. This allowed for quick tracking of either a single category as it changed over time or to track all of the statistics of a single year quickly and efficiently.
