Problem

Create a new identity for the Chico State Photography club which was formerly known as PADIO (Photography and Digital Imaging Organization) which would reignite interest in the group and encourage new memberships.

Solution

After spending several semesters dormant, students in Professor Aaron Draper’s Advanced Photography class were inspired to restart the Chico State Photo Club. The immediate goal was to come up with a more clever and relevant name. Sitting amongst the group I pondered briefly what would satisfy the need for an accurate name represented by a memorable acronym, and I arrived at “Photographic Imaging Club” or PIC.

The branding of this project was inspired by the warm yellows and maroons of vintage Kodak packaging. I set out to make a logo for the group that could be dissected in several ways with the only rule being no aperture blades! The dotted “i” represented by a flash can stand on its own as a symbol or elevate the acronym. Featured within the “film strip” design I used the new logo to create a t-shirt design with the acronym as a pocket design on the front and the circular design on the back.

The newly emerging club was presented with several layouts and color options before voting on the design seen here. Shirts printed by Silkshop Screen Printing in Chico, CA.
