Problem

Design a layout for the debut release of California Rock and Roll band “Slugger” including front and back covers, center label, and lyric insert. Released domestically by Longshot Records and in Europe by Try and Stop Me Records.

Solution

This project began when the band hired me to capture a sign in a park next to the drummer’s house that they could use as a logo. The sign hanging over a gazebo, coincidently, simply read “SLUGGER”. I discerned that the text was in futura bold condensed and was able to recreate it for them.

Soon after, the band was approached and asked if they would be interested in releasing their recently recorded album as a 10-inch vinyl record and I was asked to create the visual elements for it. My immediate thought was to utilize the aforementioned “SLUGGER” logotype and I paired it with superclarendon, a serif typeface, for the song titles and additional info.

For the front and back cover photos we knew we wanted to tell a story but also to let the listener imagine the events that transpire between the moments on each cover, creating a more engaging experience for the record as a whole. We made the photographs and I added them into the layout of the record, which is currently in production.
